Learning how to ask “why”

A first journey through Metaphysics via the desire to understand, types of explanation and the distinction between potentiality and actuality. An invitation to slow down over its terms.

An original introduction. This guide accompanies the work; it is neither the complete text nor a translation.

From experience to first principles

Book Alpha connects knowledge with experience, skills and the search for reasons. Experience recognises cases; a more general inquiry asks why things happen this way. This progression does not make experience useless. It shows how repeated observation can become a question about what explains something and about the limits of that explanation.

Do not give “why” just one form

Investigating causes does not merely identify an earlier event that triggers a result. Matter, form, the source of change and an end are distinct routes to understanding. Use a manufactured object to grasp the distinctions, then ask whether their application remains convincing in nature. A useful classification does not by itself establish its universality.

Distinguish potentiality and actuality

A capacity is not identical to its exercise: knowing how to play an instrument differs from playing it now. Potentiality and actuality help explain change without saying that something comes from absolute nothingness. The distinction has more complex metaphysical uses. Begin with examples, then examine what the reasoning adds to simply observing a transformation.

An idea to keep.

Understanding sometimes requires several complementary explanations and precise attention to the words connecting them.

Your turn to think.

  1. In an explanation you find convincing, what kind of “why” receives an answer?
  2. What distinguishes possessing a capacity from exercising it well?
