Recognize a stratagem without losing the question

Use Eristic Dialectic to notice when discussion leaves relevant reasons behind.

An original introduction. This guide accompanies the work; it is neither the complete text nor a translation.

Identify the actual claim

Write down one precise proposition before examining replies. Many stratagems expand or shift a claim until defending it becomes impossible. A useful first response returns to the words actually used instead of accepting a distorted replacement.

02 /

Separate proof from impression

A brilliant phrase, cited authority or applauding audience can create an impression of victory. Ask what connects these things to the proposition. Relevant expertise may provide evidence; unrelated prestige does not supply the missing argument.

03 /

Choose a constructive response

Recognizing a personal attack does not require repeating it. Name the shift, request evidence or suspend the exchange. The purpose is to restore an intelligible inquiry rather than turn every conversation into a contest for domination.

An idea to keep.

Protect the question, the reasons and the possibility of being corrected.

Your turn to think.

  1. What evidence would make you admit your claim is false?
  2. When does continuing a discussion still improve understanding?
