The Last Interview and Other Conversations
This posthumous volume collects interviews, including the influential conversation with Günter Gaus. Spoken explanation offers accessible entrances to exile, language, thinking and politics, but the editorial collection is distinct from any single interview’s original occasion.
Understanding the text
Arendt’s political thinking emerged from German philosophy, Jewish political experience, exile and her encounter with American public life. She usually resists turning a historical event into an illustration of a timeless system. Follow her distinctions closely, then test the historical examples and exclusions on which they depend. In posthumous collections, an editor’s arrangement must be distinguished from a book planned and completed by Arendt herself.
Key points
- 01
Self-description
Arendt’s refusal of familiar professional labels helps explain her wish to understand political experience without founding a closed system.
- 02
Language
Reflections on German and exile distinguish the persistence of a language from loyalty to a state or regime.
- 03
Conversation
Questions, translation and editing shape a spoken exchange; a memorable answer should be checked against its full context.
How to read it
Identify the interviewer and date before quoting; compare an interview’s concise formulation with the corresponding argument in a book.
