Reading the mechanisms of domination

Approach The Origins of Totalitarianism without turning a historical concept into a generic insult.

An original introduction. This guide accompanies the work; it is neither the complete text nor a translation.

01 /

Respect the structure

Locate the three main parts on antisemitism, imperialism and totalitarianism. The book reconstructs historical elements rather than offering one cause for every crime.

02 /

Distinguish isolation and solitude

Examine how destroyed political relationships make people vulnerable to total organization. Compare this with the solitude required for thinking, which is a different phenomenon.

03 /

Test a comparison

Before using the word totalitarian, specify the institutions, terror, ideology and sources being studied. A partial resemblance does not establish that two regimes are identical.

An idea to keep.

A concept illuminates history when its criteria remain explicit and its limits open to challenge.

Your turn to think.

  1. What evidence supports your comparison?
  2. Which collective relationships protect the capacity to judge?
