Jena System Drafts I–III
The three editorially established draft groups contain the 1803/04 Philosophy of Nature and Spirit, the 1804/05 Logic, Metaphysics and Philosophy of Nature, and the 1805/06 Philosophy of Nature and Spirit. They show a system repeatedly reorganized in manuscript.
Understanding the text
These are separate surviving manuscript complexes, not three books Hegel published. Older editions called portions Realphilosophie; modern critical editions preserve their dates and textual boundaries.
Key points
- 01
Conceptual experiment
Changes of organization reveal that the later system emerged through revision, not from an unchanged scheme already complete in Jena.
- 02
Work and language
Analyses of tool use, communication and recognition connect individual consciousness to shared practices and durable social forms.
- 03
Nature and spirit
Their relation is repeatedly redrawn, allowing readers to compare explanatory ambitions and the resistance of particular material.
How to read it
Identify which dated draft you are reading. Avoid combining passages from all three into a seamless early doctrine or silently substituting later terminology.
