David Hume / The document inventory

Letters & fragments

Each inventory follows the numbering of an identified edition. “Complete” refers to that edition and document type; it does not claim to cover every surviving document by the philosopher.

The coverage labels distinguish fully indexed corpora from lists that remain partial.

G. Birkbeck Hill (1888), Letters of David Hume to William Strahan: numbered sequence 1–99

Complete inventory for this edition

All 99 numbered entries in Hill’s 1888 edition, verified against its printed contents, pp. xi–xvi. This is the complete sequence in that edition, not Hume’s complete correspondence: 84 entries are letters by Hume, including no. 64 to Thomas Cadell; 15 are replies or later testimony by others. The prefatory Adam Smith letter, autobiography and letters quoted inside editorial notes are outside this numbered sequence. Titles identify sender and recipient rather than inventing authorial subjects. Numbers include the printed page; dates use day.month.year, preserve editorial brackets, and reduce uncertain seasons to a bracketed year. No. 93 is a draft; no. 94 is by Hume’s nephew. The edition’s order is retained even where dates are not chronological.
