Thinking for yourself, together

A short essay for examining intellectual dependence and the conditions of thought that can be publicly challenged.

Leaving tutelage

Kant describes the difficulty of using our own understanding rather than routinely deferring to a guide. Do not confuse this autonomy with rejecting expertise or learning. The question is whether proposed reasons can be examined, rather than simply replacing a master with a personal certainty that remains equally protected from criticism.

Restore the vocabulary to its context

For Kant, the public use of reason is the scholar’s address to a reading public. Private use concerns performing an instituted role, even one visible to many people. This terminology can be surprising. Follow his examples, then discuss the difficulties that arise within institutions where obedience effectively restricts the possibility of speaking.

The collective conditions of autonomy

Individual courage is not enough when spaces of discussion are closed or criticism invites punishment. The essay therefore connects personal activity with political conditions. Its caution towards monarchical power must be read historically. Ask which institutions now enable reasoned challenge, including from people who do not all occupy the same social position.

Questions to carry into your reading

  • To which authority do you sometimes delegate judgement without examining its reasons?
  • Who can genuinely participate in a discussion described as public?

Thinking for yourself develops with others, in spaces where reasons can be discussed.
