Works, testimonies and further readings are distinguished. Dates refer to composition or first publication, as specified in each entry.
Bibliographic scope
The catalogue distinguishes published books, named short texts, posthumously edited manuscripts, and journalistic collections. Capital’s Volumes I–III are grouped here with Engels’s role specified; Theories of Surplus Value retains its distinct editorial status. MEGA and MECW include many additional articles, excerpts, notebooks, and letters. The correspondence inventory states its documentary scope and does not replace the complete MEGA correspondence; the eleven Theses are indexed separately.
Doctoral dissertation; surviving manuscript has gaps. The young Marx works within German idealism; this text does not yet contain his mature critique of political economy.
Two articles responding to Bruno Bauer. Against Bauer, Marx defends political rights without prior abandonment of Judaism. The second part also uses anti-Jewish stereotypes requiring explicit scrutiny.
Working notebooks published long after Marx’s death. These manuscripts are not a finished book. Philosophical categories and editorial history differ from later developments in Capital.
Written in French against Proudhon’s Philosophy of Poverty. The polemic targets a specific socialist interlocutor. It anticipates later problems without simply reproducing Capital’s value theory.
Analysis of the coup of 2 December 1851. The Napoleonic reference highlights political names, costumes, and memories. Satire accompanies analysis of institutions and groups.
Preparatory notebooks for the critique of political economy. The 1857 Introduction and the so-called “fragment on machines” belong to this set, not an independently completed program.
First published installment of a larger project. It precedes Capital and realizes only part of the announced program. Distinguish the preface’s outline from the developed economic argument.
Dossier: Rheinische Zeitung, Neue Rheinische Zeitung, and New-York Daily Tribune articles; Revelations Concerning the Communist Trial in Cologne; Herr Vogt; International Inaugural Address and Rules.
