From gathering to collective action

Follow the movement from series to group in Critique of Dialectical Reason.

An original introduction. This guide accompanies the work; it is neither the complete text nor a translation.

01 /

The series

People at a bus stop share a system without acting together. Their unity comes from outside. Distinguish spatial proximity, common interest and coordinated action.

02 /

The group in fusion

Shared danger can turn serial passivity into common praxis. This is not a permanent solution: sustaining it immediately raises organizational problems.

03 /

The institution

Oaths, roles and rules stabilize action but can produce new constraints. Follow the transformation without imagining a collective mind independent of people.

An idea to keep.

Collectives emerge and change; maintaining freedom requires work on their institutions.

Your turn to think.

  1. What unites your group today?
  2. When does a shared rule obstruct action?
