How does consciousness learn?
Read the Introduction and the first stages of the Phenomenology as an experiment in revising standards of knowledge.
An original introduction. This guide accompanies the work; it is neither the complete text nor a translation.
Start with a claim
Identify what consciousness takes to be certain. Do not replace its standpoint immediately with your preferred theory; the test must first use its own criterion.
Follow the failure
Observe the gap between what the position promises and what its experience delivers. Explain why this gap requires a new account, rather than merely another example.
Carry something forward
State what the next position preserves. Development changes the framework while retaining an intelligible connection to the problem that produced it.
A dialectical reading explains a transition; it does not merely attach a label to opposing opinions.
Your turn to think.
- Which claim fails by its own standard?
- What survives the transition?
