Simone de Beauvoir
Freedom is built with others.
A philosopher, novelist and memoirist, Simone de Beauvoir examines freedom as always situated in a body, a history and social relations. Her work connects an ethics of existence with analysis of the concrete conditions of emancipation.
What needs to change for freedom to become a real possibility?
Biography
Simone de Beauvoir is born in Paris into a bourgeois Catholic family. Her studies and life choices lead her to question the expectations imposed on women. Her philosophical work unfolds through essays, novels and autobiographical writing: different forms for exploring how a singular existence encounters the constraints of its time.
02 /Philosophy
To be free is not to choose from nowhere. Resources, the body, history and institutions shape a person’s possibilities. Freedom is not cancelled by every constraint, but it becomes concrete through material and social conditions. Emancipation therefore requires more than an instruction to want something strongly enough.
