Wandering with the Inner Chapters
Follow perspective, skill and the usefulness of the useless through the seven Inner Chapters, from the great bird Peng to Cook Ding.
An original introduction. This guide accompanies the work; it is neither the complete text nor a translation.
Situating the text
Traditionally regarded as Zhuang Zhou’s own writing, the Inner Chapters are more unified in style and vocabulary than the rest of the book. Their authorship, their dating and their separation from the other chapters, fixed by later editors, remain debated. The seven Inner Chapters move through parables, dialogues and arguments: the fish Kun that becomes the bird Peng, the discussion on seeing things as equal, Cook Ding’s carving, the useless tree, the fasting of the heart-mind and the death of Hundun. They question fixed values and invite a freer relation to change, usefulness and death.
Following the arguments
Perspective : The great bird and the mocking cicada show that judgments of size, success and value depend on the scale chosen by the observer. Fasting of the heart-mind : Emptying the mind of fixed intentions lets a person listen to others and respond to them instead of imposing a programme. Usefulness of the useless : A gnarled tree survives because carpenters ignore it, turning ordinary standards of value upside down.
Continuing the reading
Read chapters 1 to 3 in two different translations and note how each renders key terms such as dao, tian and xin before generalizing about a doctrine. Traditionally regarded as Zhuang Zhou’s own writing, the Inner Chapters are more unified in style and vocabulary than the rest of the book. Their authorship, their dating and their separation from the other chapters, fixed by later editors, remain debated.
Changing the scale of judgment can reveal value where ordinary standards see only uselessness.
Your turn to think.
- Which standard of usefulness does the story of the gnarled tree call into question?
- What does Cook Ding attend to that an ordinary cook overlooks?
