Work

The Elements of Law, Natural and Politic

Completed in May 1640 and dedicated to William Cavendish, Earl of Newcastle, it circulated in manuscript during the quarrels over royal power that preceded the Long Parliament. Its two parts were printed separately in 1650 as Human Nature and De Corpore Politico; the first edition under the original title was published by Ferdinand Tönnies in 1889.

021642

On the Citizen (De Cive)

Planned as the third section of his Elements of Philosophy, it was published first, in a small private printing in Paris in 1642, because the disputes before the civil war made its subject urgent. An enlarged edition with a new preface and explanatory notes appeared in Amsterdam in 1647, and an English version followed in 1651.
