Bibliographic scope

These records present three major works from a vast body of treatises, letters and sermons. On the Trinity, On Christian Teaching, the early dialogues, the anti-Pelagian writings and the Reconsiderations are not yet indexed separately; this is a selection, not a complete bibliography.

Work

02413–426

The City of God

Begun in 413, three years after Alaric’s Goths sacked Rome in 410, and completed around 426, the work grew over long years of composition and controversy. Its earthly city is not a theory of the state in the modern sense, and its passages on war, punishment and coercion have been read in conflicting ways.

03388–395

On Free Choice of the Will

Begun in Rome around 388 and completed in Africa by about 395, the dialogue belongs to his early writings against the Manichaeans. Pelagians later quoted it in their favour; in his Reconsiderations Augustine replied that it had not discussed grace because that was not its question.
